A Luxury Hall Bathroom in Margate, NJ
A Vision for Serenity
A family in Margate, New Jersey needed their hall bathroom to actually work for daily life with kids, and they wanted it to feel like a coastal retreat too. BathHaus Studio got them both, and kept the budget in check while doing it.
The Problem: A Layout That Didn’t Fit the Family
The old bathroom had no tub. For a family with kids, that’s not a minor inconvenience, it’s a dealbreaker. This wasn’t a job for new paint and a nicer mirror. The layout itself needed to change.
The Solution: Adding a Tub Without Moving a Single Pipe
Here’s where the real savings came in. Instead of relocating the plumbing to fit a new layout, we designed the tub and shower to work with the existing supply and drain lines. Moving plumbing means cutting into floors and walls, rerouting water lines, and often pulling permits for the work. Skip that step, and you skip a big chunk of the labor and demo cost that usually comes with a bathroom remodel. That savings gave us room in the budget to spend on materials and finishes instead of hidden infrastructure.
With the layout settled, we brought in shiplap walls in a soft blue-gray to set the coastal tone, and made sure nothing blocked the window so natural light still fills the room. The floor got a driftwood-gray wood-look tile, tough enough for daily kid traffic and easy to keep clean.
The vanity is a weathered gray driftwood piece with three drawers and brushed nickel pulls, giving the family somewhere to actually put towels and bath toys instead of leaving them on the counter. The quartz counter on top resists stains, which matters more in a family bathroom than almost anywhere else in the house. A simple white-framed mirror sits between crystal drop sconces, and the faucet and hardware all match in brushed nickel so the whole vanity feels put together instead of pieced together.
For the shower and tub surround, we picked a large-format gray marble-look tile close in tone to the shiplap, so it complements the room instead of competing with it. A frameless glass shower door helps too. Swap in a curtain or a bulky enclosure and the room shrinks. Glass keeps sightlines open, which matters a lot when you’ve just added a tub to a small footprint.
Storage didn’t need built-in cabinetry to solve it. A woven seagrass hamper, a couple of open baskets, a stack of towels, and a hanging robe cover what a family actually needs day to day, and they fit the coastal look without looking like an afterthought. Every choice here came out of our design-build process, from first sketch to final install.
Why Keeping the Plumbing in Place Was the Right Call
People often assume a better layout means moving everything around. Sometimes it does. But plumbing is one of the most expensive things to relocate in a bathroom, and it’s rarely necessary. By working within the existing plumbing footprint, this project avoided the demo, the permitting, and the added labor that comes with rerouting lines, and put that money toward a tub, better materials, and finishes the family will actually notice every day.
